Yashasvi Jaiswal is a cricketer from India who plays for the Indian national team. He made his debut in July 2023 against the West Indies and scored a century in his first Test innings. Jaiswal was born on December 28, 2001, in Suriyawan, Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh. He was the fourth of six children born to Bhupendra Jaiswal, who owned a small hardware store, and Kanchan Jaiswal, a housewife. At the age of 10, he moved to Mumbai to attend cricket training at Azad Maidan. Initially, he was offered accommodation at a dairy business in exchange for work, but he was evicted by the owner because he was unable to work regularly. As a result, he slept in a tent among the groundsmen at the Maidan and sold panipuri to supplement his income.

Jaiswal initially rose to notice in 2015, when he scored 319 not out and took 13/99 in a Giles Shield match, establishing an all-round record in Indian school cricket. He was selected for Mumbai’s under-16 squad and later for India’s under-19 cricket team. During the 2018 Under-19 Asia Cup, which India won, Jaiswal was the highest run-scorer with 318 runs and was awarded Player of the Tournament.

In a Youth Test against South Africa’s under-19s in 2019, Jaiswal made 173 runs off 220 balls. In the same year, he managed to score 294 runs in seven matches for England’s under-19 tri-series, with four half-centuries to his name. Consequently, he was selected to play for India’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup team in December 2019. Jaiswal emerged as the highest run-scorer of the tournament, with a century against Pakistan’s under-19 team in the semi-final.

Jaiswal gained his first call-up to India’s Test cricket squad in June 2023, for the series against the West Indies. He made his series debut in the first Test, striking a century and opening the batting with 171 runs and was named Player of the Match for his contributions to the team’s victory. He made his T20I debut in the third match of the series against the West Indies in August 2023. He got his first T20I half-century (84* off 51 balls) in the fourth match of the series, sharing a 165-run opening combination with Shubman Gill.

In January 2024, he was named to India’s side for a five-match home test series with England. In the first innings of the first test, he scored 80 runs off 74 deliveries. In the first innings of the second test, he remained undefeated at 179 on a day when no other Indian batsman reached 40.

He was bought by the Rajasthan Royals in the 2020 IPL auction and played his first Twenty20 cricket match on September 22, 2020. On October 2, 2021, he scored his first half-century in T20 cricket against Chennai Super Kings, which was the second-fastest in franchise history at the time.

He achieved his first century in T20 cricket on April 30, 2023, in a match against Mumbai Indians, scoring 124 runs from 62 balls, and recording the second-highest score in an IPL match at Wankhede Stadium.

On May 11, 2023, he broke the previous record shared by KL Rahul and Pat Cummins for the fastest Indian Premier League (IPL) half-century by scoring it in just 13 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders. He finished the 2023 Indian Premier League as the highest run-scorer for Rajasthan, scoring 625 runs in 14 matches.
